Born to a family of farmers in the impoverished village of Lapung, Ranchi, Jharkhand, Dr. Avinash Gupta’s early life was marked by hardship and adversity. In the 1960s, a farmer’s son typically inherited debt and constant struggle, and Dr. Gupta was no exception. He and his six siblings were raised by a deaf farmer, facing numerous challenges including being expelled from classrooms for not having textbooks and wading through a river to reach school.
Despite these obstacles, Dr. Gupta secured admission to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in 1971, where he completed his MBBS, DTMH, and MD. He served as a government doctor in rural Jharkhand before moving to the United States in 1986 to advance his medical career while continuing his mission of public service. Dr. Gupta trained in Cardiology at SUNY-Downstate, Brooklyn, Dr. Gupta has been practicing in Lakewood, New Jersey, since 1994. He is the currently the Chief of Cardiology and President of the Medical Staff at Monmouth Medical Center - Southern Campus.
A renowned doctor in New Jersey, Dr. Gupta long aspired to improve the lives of people in India. In 2008, he established the Dr. Avinash Gupta Foundation to award educational scholarships to underprivileged children in Jharkhand. The foundation provides scholarships at St. Aloysius’ and St. John’s schools in Ranchi, and at St. Xavier's College, Ranchi. Additionally, since 2010, the foundation has awarded a gold medal and Rs. 10,000 to the top student at RIMS through Ranchi University.
Dr. Gupta’s foundation aims to spread literacy, provide safe drinking water, and establish mini-libraries, computer learning centers, sewing centers, and other cottage industries in rural areas.
Never satisfied with his philanthropic efforts, Dr. Gupta also sought to strengthen the Indian-American community. In 2019, he was elected President of the Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America (BJANA), a non-profit organization dedicated to these two Indian states. His leadership and community service were recognized by the Consulate General of India in New York on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in 2020.
Along with other Indian-American doctors, Dr. Gupta established the PRavasi Alumni Nishulk (PRAN) clinic in Ranchi to provide healthcare via telehealth and medical camps. During the devastating second wave of COVID-19 in 2021, the clinic, now known as PRAN-BJANA, played a crucial role in delivering medical relief. Dr. Gupta and his wife, Dr. Geeta Gupta, launched a free telemedicine helpline, attending to over 1,000 patients via Zoom. Despite personal losses, Dr. Gupta coordinated with other doctors to send medicines and oxygen concentrators to India, and raised $150,000 for medical relief.
In the U.S., Dr. Gupta was actively involved in the vaccination drive in New Jersey, administering vaccines to over 5,000 people. His dedication was acknowledged by the Senate and General Assembly of New Jersey with a proclamation.
Dr. Gupta has also been the Chairman of the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple USA and the Indian Cultural Community Center in Toms River, New Jersey, since its inception in 2012. He has served as president of the Monmouth Ocean County Association of Physicians from India, promoting community service, education, networking, and mentorship.
Dr. Gupta’s unwavering dedication to public health service has made a significant impact on the lives of the poor in both India and the U.S. His efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, including telehealth consultations, establishing a COVID Care Center, and providing medical supplies, have saved countless lives. His philanthropic work extends beyond healthcare to include educational support and community development.
Dr. Avinash Gupta is a remarkable leader, compassionate humanitarian, and tireless advocate for the underprivileged. His contributions to both his homeland and his adopted country exemplify his commitment to making a difference in the world.
